Stitched Self-Portrait
This fiber arts piece depicts my self-development. My waves of memories are depicted through the waves of thread around my younger self in white and pink stitches in the background (like ripples in a liquid reflection), and my current self-portrait in the front corner is more in focus, with the bright red thread weaving through it as day-to-day markers of time. The needle is left in the piece and stays threaded as I continue to build on myself through time, days, months and years.
Critical Eye
This piece represents an artist’s self-critical eye, looking backwards again and again at what they've done. As an artist, I often feel like I am going one step forward and two steps back. Sometimes looking back too much can strangle your work. To create this, I printed out copies of a self-portrait I drew from looking in the mirror, and placed them on top of an observational drawing I made of the back of a small model of human musculature. I used red thread, bundled with pieces of fabric to represent the fashion pieces I create. I then added my fingerprints to depict the imprints of the iterative effort.
